Unlike your typical carport, which is sheltered on at least three sides, a carport canopy is nothing more than a roof on metal poles. It does not work well as storage area, unlike most carports, which can double as practically another room for the house, or at least take on any storage problems you throw at them. But the carport canopy has one major advantage over other kinds of carports: it's cheap. In fact, when compared with normal carports, if all you're doing is keeping rain and pollen off the roof of your car, the carport canopy is the cheapest, most affordable, and downright best way to go.

The most important thing to remember about the carport canopy is that it is basically a large kite. It is *not* effective in areas that get a lot of wind, and even in areas that don't get a lot of wind, it should still be anchored down firmly to prevent it from blowing away and possibly damaging your house, your car, or any other nearby property. Placing the carport under large trees or behind hedges or board fences that can act as windscreens can also help. And, of course, planting hedge shrubs around the carport will not only help with the wind, it can also offer more privacy, more safety, and a more attractive view for your yard. If you're looking at putting in a carport canopy, you should certainly look at supplementing it with hedge shrubs.

A canopy may not work for storage, but it is an ideal cover for a picnic table, a child's play area, or anything else that wants moderate but not foolproof protection from sun and rain. In fact, on a day with a gentle but persistent rain, a carport canopy and a box of driveway chalk may be just the ticket to relieve the bored whines of children throughout your household. It just goes to show, there's more than one use for even the cheapest of structures.
